Choosing a New Surface to Bring Your Pool Back to Life

Upgrading your swimming pool can make it more attractive and more fun for the family – while also increasing your pool’s structural integrity and longevity. The surface acts as a waterproof coating, preventing water from allowing concrete cancer to develop within the reinforced concrete shell. It also ensures the chemicals in the water don’t get absorbed into the shell, helping your pool look modern and inviting for many years to come.

There are many finish types available and each has its own advantages and drawbacks; the right surface for you will depend a lot on the look and feel you’re going for and the budget you have in mind. To help you choose the right material for your surface, our pool-finish specialists have put together a list of benefits and disadvantages for each of the five main options.

Colormaker Pool Paint

Advantages:

  • Most affordable option
  • Lots of colours to choose from
  • Fast application

Disadvantages:

  • Needs to be completely reapplied after eight years or so
  • Not the most attractive option
  • Algae growth can make this surface slippery.

This is a cheap, short-term solution.

Fully Tiled

Advantages:

  • Long lasting and very durable (won’t show any damage for many decades)
  • Low maintenance
  • Fantastic appearance
  • Silky smooth and gentle on your feet.

Disadvantages:

  • Most expensive option
  • Takes longer to apply.

Pebblecrete

Advantages:

  • High-quality and long-lasting option (usually lasts at least 15 years)
  • Strong grip to minimise risk of accidents.

Disadvantages:

  • It can be difficult to treat/remove algae
  • Pebbles can get stuck in equipment
  • Some people find the rough surface uncomfortable.

Quartzon

Advantages:

  • Small quartz crystals create an appealing sparkle effect
  • Long-lasting option (usually lasts at least 15 years)
  • Strong grip to minimise risk of accidents
  • Fast application.

Disadvantages:

  • Extra chemical (Cal-stop) needs to be added every six months
  • Regular maintenance required during start-up phase
  • Surface can fade if pool is not kept chemically balanced.

Beadcrete

Advantages:

  • White surface, coloured chips and reflective additives combine to enhance the water’s appearance
  • Factory blended for consistent quality
  • Smooth textured finish that reduces risk of skin abrasion
  • Easy for a tradesperson to place and finish.
